Is This You?

You know you’re stuck, but how do you know if it’s trauma?

Trauma sounds like a scary condition, one you might only associate with war veterans or severely abused children.  What most people don’t realize is that trauma can result any time the body perceives a threat, but doesn’t have the resources to deal with it.

Our nervous systems are only capable of so much stimulus before overwhelm and freeze can set in.  This is especially true for small children who have even smaller nervous systems and are completely dependent on their primary caregivers. During childhood, if your emotional or physical needs were not consistently met, or if you experienced a physical threat (such as surgery or injury), trauma may have resulted.  Below are some other potential causes of trauma.

Possible Causes of Trauma:

  • Emotional abuse
  • Neglect or inadequate care during childhood
  • Physical abuse
  • Falls/Injuries
  • Surgeries
  • Overwhelming life experiences
  • Pre- and perinatal stress
  • Violent acts/attacks

In my practice as a life coach, I often see unresolved trauma show up in clients as chronic “stuckness”.  This is where smart, self-aware women who know what they need to do, can’t seem to make the progress they want.

Common Symptoms of Trauma:

  • Chronically stuck
  • Feelings of overwhelm or helplessness
  • Anxiety/panic attacks
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Hyper-arousal
  • Unresolved pain
  • Gastro-intestinal issues
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling disconnected to life

When there’s a chronic and seemingly irreconcilable disconnect between where you are and where you want to be, it usually means the body and the spirit are out of alignment.  In my experience, trauma held in the body frequently causes this type of disconnect, preventing you from reaching your full potential, and living a more joyful life.
